A riverside cabin with direct access to the river.

Your hosts are Carol & Neil

I am always on the lookout for affordable family fishing and boating holiday gems. Only four hours from Brisbane or two and a half hours from Maroochydore is a little cabin on two and a half acres of private land. It is on the Burrum River and from the private jetty, it is only a 20min tinny ride to Burrum River Heads. From Burrum Heads you have access to the great fishing expanse of the Frazer Island region.

A local boat ramp is only one property downstream, it is an ideal location for fishing the river and estuaries. There is plenty of fishing opportunities from the shore, in a boat or canoe. The kids had a great time catching bream, whiting and flathead from a sand-bar that revealed itself at low tide.

We even managed to catch a few mud crabs, the crab pots are kindly supplied by Neil.

The Burrum river system holds good stocks of fish and crabs in all areas. This fishing map includes Burrum Heads, Burrum River, Gregory River, Isis River and Cherwell River.

Carol & Neil, the owners make you feel very welcome, the kids loved the two kayaks that are provided, they used them every day to explore the mangrove islands, shores and sandbars up and down the river. Life jackets are also supplied. Two mountain bikes are also supplied if you or the kids want to go for a ride. If you are after an affordable private, quite peaceful escape then this will deliver.

The fit out of the cabin has all the required fittings for a family of four or five, a queen bed, single bed and a fold out double bed couch. Air-con is in the bedroom and lounge so staying cool is guaranteed. The kitchen is modern with a laundry to wash the smelly fishing clothes at the end of the day.

There is plenty of space to park your car and boat, you can even leave your boat moored at the private jetty if you want.

The township of Howard is only a 10min drive, it has one hotel with great pub meals, a supermarket/news agency, supermarket/hardware store, bottle shop, country style café, doctor, vet and post office.

Another great point is that if you want to head out to the beach, or a lovely feed at Toogoom or Burrum Heads then it is only 25 min drive. You could even go by boat if you wish. My family and I highly recommend Goodys On The Beach restaurant at Toogoom for a great meal of seafood, the jetty and scenery is fantastic. If in doubt just ask Neil and he will send you in the right direction.

Whenever we holiday in this region and we are close enough we always head to Bundaberg for an amazing seafood meal at Grunske’s by the River. You can get amazing local fresh seafood cooked to order or cold, the prawns are always sweet and the price is cheaper than in Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast. And of course, the kids have to stop at the Bundaberg Ginger Beer factory for a free tasting session, over twenty flavours now! After the sugar hit, we always end up with a few cases in the back of the car as it is also cheaper than the retail shops.

Also one always has to stop at the Bundy Rum factory and shop!!!!!

On the Bruce Hwy just before the turnoff to the township of Howard heading north is a tourist sign for Bamboo Land. It is a nursery that was started in the early 1990’s and the bamboo forest with all the various species is very cool.

To finalise I want to restate that Carol and Neil’s place is amazing value for money. For an affordable family, fishing and boating holiday I highly recommend it.
